[WE] GOT BILLS [WE] GOTTA PAY…

April 21, 2020

…and like most people, we’ve been ordering lots of unnecessary shit from the internet that we probably don’t need. We’ve been paying our bills, too, but we’ve definitely been doing our fair share of online shopping these days.

We’ve been trying to support a lot of our favorite Michigan small businesses during these challenging times. And while we’ve supported many of our local businesses lately — combination plates from our beloved Chinese restaurant, pizza kits from our local pizza joint, and our local grocery store where we roll in wearing pajamas when we need groceries — we thought we’d highlight a few of our favorite small businesses across Michigan that sell their goods online.

SOY CANDLES FROM COYER CANDLE CO.

Laryssa’s candle stash has been running dangerously low lately. So instead of buying candles from Bath and Body Works or Marshall’s, we thought we’d order a few from one of our favorite local candle companies: Coyer Candle Co. offer super high quality candles that are reasonably priced, and seem to last a long time.

Laryssa had smelled these in the store many, many times, and they all smell amazing, so we knew we couldn’t go wrong. Here’s what she chose to go with for now:

Lime + Cilantro

Suttons Bay Raspberry Patch

M-22 Fruit Stand

Urban Spice (we got to choose our scent and phrase for this one. There’s a million different options, from funny quarantine sayings, mother’s day, to Joe Exotic quotes, And yes, Carole Baskin did kill her husband.)

Our next three on our list are the Blueberries + Bourbon, Lilac, and Traverse City Cherries Galore. Coyer Candles is even running a special right now on their clear 9 oz. candles, with free shipping when you spend more than $40. Definitely check them out!

FLAVORED COFFEE FROM HORROCK’S

If you haven’t been to Horrock’s in Lansing before, you simply must. Okay, maybe not right now, but it hands down is the best grocery store in all the land. Call us high strung, but we’re kinda particular about our coffee. Folger’s or Maxwell House? Complete garbage to us. So as we watched our flavored coffee supply quickly diminish, we knew we had to act fast.

A few nights ago we pulled up the World Wide Web and setup camp; navigating the internet for somewhere we could order flavored coffee from. We were ecstatic when we found that you can order Horrock’s coffee blends and have them shipped right to our doorstep!

It’s a bit pricey online at $13 a package (plus free shipping), but definitely worth it. It’s cheaper in store, too. We ordered three packages, and were surprised that they shipped out the next morning. Our order included a package of Coffee Cake, Butter Rum Cream, and Fudge Brownie. A few other flavors we love are Blueberry Muffin, Red Velvet (which we think is seasonal), and Devil’s Food. Hell, every flavor of Horrock’s Coffee is good.

Basically, we love any flavor of coffee that doesn’t actually taste like coffee. And we still use a shit ton of creamer.

COOKIES FROM DETROIT COOKIE COMPANY

The Detroit Cookie Company is one of our favorite small businesses that we discovered when we lived right outside of Detroit. They have the best damn cookies. Ever. When we saw that they were temporarily closing their storefront due to COVID-19, we placed an order online and had them shipped to our house.

While every one of their cookie flavors is amazing, we have our favorites. Laryssa loves the Circus Snack (they add frosted animal crackers and rainbow sprinkles to the dough), and Alan loves the Banana Pudding flavor. We ordered enough so we could get free shipping, and we put a ton of them in the freezer to enjoy later. Stick ’em in the microwave for a few seconds, and it’s like they’re right out of the oven. They’re seriously the best.

We’re hoping that during these challenging times that we’ll be able to support and highlight more Michigan small businesses, and we hope that if you can, you will too. What small businesses are you supporting? We’d love to hear!

A+L

PS: None of these goods would be possible without our beloved UPS, USPS, and FedEx workers! Thanks for keeping us sane and working your tails off during these challenging times. Much love!

Our poor front yard. Year after year, it can't seem to catch a break. Last year, we lost a huge part of our beautiful maple tree, and this year, we're having two trees taken down (one already down just waiting on it to be milled), and our utility company is replacing a gas line.
We really need to get around to writing a blog post about our new desks, but are struggling to come up with a witty title. Anyway, we are loving our new @autonomousdotai SmartDesks. When we both started working from home, our temporary solution, which stuck around for 12+ months, was our old dining room table from our first apartment. With two laptops and two extra monitors, we literally had no space. Now? So much room for activities!
It's been a while since we've updated our blog or posted on Instagram, but we thought we'd blow the dust off today and share one of our favorite traditions. Since 2017, we've ordered a polymer clay portrait from @littleclayland. Check out our latest blog post to see more! Link in our bio! #TheBeckStreetHouse
Having an [almost] finished dining room is seriously the greatest thing. We’ve been working on this room in some way or another for the past two years we’ve lived here, including some window trim we put up, decided a few minutes later that we hated it, and it sat for almost a year 🥴. We splurged and bought our first real dining room set - a beautiful cherry set from a local furniture company [@gaschofurniture] and it definitely completes the space. We’re so darn excited that it has a leaf too. Still on the to do list is figure out some window treatments and switch out the light for something more our style. Oh, and new flooring someday. And house plants. Definitely more house plants.
Here we go again! We want to blog more this year, and we're kicking off 2021 with a post recapping our 2020 (in a really, really long run-on sentence), sharing our goals for The Beck Street House, along with a list of projects (with sarcastic commentary) we're hoping to cross off the list between now and December 31.
Merry Christmas from the Beck Street House! We are obsessed with this original water color painting of our favorite place on Earth from Laryssa’s sister. It’s perfect; right down to Barkley’s one floppy ear and one stiff ear. Merry Christmas!
