WE’RE HALF ASS-ING OUR WHOLE-ASS BATHROOM REMODEL.

October 12, 2020

And we’re totally doing it on purpose.

Our downstairs bathroom needs…some work. Here’s a few pictures of what our bathroom looked like when we moved in. And, to be honest, we haven’t done a single thing in here, other than hang up some shower curtains.

So let’s take a little tour…

And in case you’re new here, our house’s previous life as a duck hunters’ bed and breakfast didn’t skimp on this room either.

Believe it or not, the hunters killing the ducks don’t necessarily make Laryssa’s baths that relaxing.

And here’s the vibe we’re going for.

We’ll say this again. We’re half-assing this bathroom remodel. Our reasoning? We want to complete redo this bathroom in a couple years, but we’re not there quite yet. Right now, our bathroom is the shape of an L, and we’d like to add onto the house in that corner, knock down walls and rearrange the bathroom to accommodate our laundry area. But that’s a few years out.

We don’t necessarily have a set budget for this room, but we are trying to be budget friendly and also strategic. We’d hate to drop a bunch of dough on this bathroom only to rip it all out a few year down the road. For example, a few months ago, we bought some tile samples from Home Depot, and while we loved them, it just didn’t make sense for us to retile the floor to have to do it again in a few years.

Here’s the nuts and bolts of our half-ass bathroom remodel.

VANITY AREA
We’re keeping the same cabinet for the vanity, but definitely are going to give it an update. We’re planning to take out and replace the barn wood panels in the cabinet doors, paint the cabinet, and put on some new hardware (we’re thinking brass). Up top, we’re planning to hang horizontal shiplap, add a new mirror, and new lights. We’re still trying to decide what’s best to do with the countertop.

TUB AND SHOWER
We’re not crazy about the big sea-shell shaped shower surround, but we’re gonna live with it. We’re gonna try refinishing the surround using this Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refreshing Kit, and hopefully, if everything goes well, it’ll be a fresh, crisp white (send up some non-denominational prayers). We’re then going to replace the shower head and curtain rod with something more modern (and less rusty).

FLOORING
We’re keeping the flooring the same, but going to give it a refresher. It was cracked and lifting up in a few spots, so we’re going to fix that first, and then figure out what’s next.

WALLS
In the words of Laryssa’s old (and really shitty) boss, we’re gonna “jazz it up” We’re going to rip out the old barn wood, cross our fingers that there’s drywall underneath, and replace it with something that’s more our style (that’s NOT drywall. Screw that.). We’re then going to paint the top half a bold color that fits the rest of our house.

SECOND SHOWER AREA
No f****** clue. And we have no clue why it’s even here. But, we’re gonna do something.

Oh and two other things on our list. We’re thinking about buying a new shitter (gonna sit on that one for a bit), and add some plants. Lots and lots plants.

Tune back in later this week to see how things are going!

Merry Christmas from the Beck Street House! We are Merry Christmas from the Beck Street House! We are obsessed with this original water color painting of our favorite place on Earth from Laryssa’s sister. It’s perfect; right down to Barkley’s one floppy ear and one stiff ear. Merry Christmas!
